The Indian student who was gang raped in New Delhi earlier this month has died at Mt Elizabeth Hospital.

The 23-year-old woman was pronounced dead at about 4.45am on Saturday.

She had been flown to Singapore for medical treatment on Thursday morning.

In an update at 11pm on Friday, the hospital had said her condition had taken a turn for the worse. Her vital signs were deteriorating with signs of severe organ failure.

On Dec 16, the student, who has not been named so far, was raped by six men in a bus she and her male companion had boarded to go home after watching a movie.

The six men, who have since been arrested, beat and gang raped her and then stripped her before throwing her and her male companion, who was also beaten, out of the bus.

She was severely injured and underwent at least three operations.

The Indian Cabinet decided to fly her and her parents at government cost to Singapore based on the advice of a team of government and private doctors.

She was accompanied by her parents, two brothers and a team of Indian doctors led by Dr Yatin Gupta, head of the critical care unit at Delhi's Safdarjung hospital, where she was under treatment.

In Singapore, a multi-disciplinary team of specialists worked to treat her.

Mt Elizabeth said it did everything possible to stabilise her condition. Doctors fought for her life including putting her on maximum artificial ventilation support, optimal antibiotic doses as well as stimulants which maximised her body's capability to fight infections, the hospital said.

The brutality of the crime in the capital city triggered days of protests, resulting in violent clashes, with protesters demanding justice for the student and the police.

She should have been transferred out of India a long back, they did it way too late. She had brain damage and other organ failures which were not operated upon in India. Really really sad day, my heart is crying for this young lady.

Good for her, even if she fully recovers; there is no way in hell she would be able to live normal life.
Now because of her death, this issue is going to be even bigger.

I did not have any hope of her surviving this , she was harmed way beyond repair. As an Indian I am ashamed of society in India which gives birth to people like the guys who raped her and killed her.
She won`t be last till as a whole Indians wake up and for once start respecting women as other human beings.

As xpozed said I also feel ashamed. This is very sad.

@Xp0zed you worked in one of the Delhi hospital, can you please tell why our hospital can't treat her?

it was a political decision IMHO. Delhi's Hospital is not any lesser than a Singapore's hospital.

But moving a dying patient away from India was politically enforced decision. So that people wont go on rampage in Delhi and all over India when her dead body is carried out to the creamation pyre.

It is a shame for India. And it is shame for Indian Population. This is what we made of India ourselves. No one but us are responsible. You, me we all of us.

    RIP

    this..I feel the same way.

RIP to this brave girl who fought for so long.

this is a wake up call for the government. i hope people go in millions to protest against government to approve fast track courts for rapists, more cops on roads at night patrolling, stricter checks on public and private transport companies employees.

Infrastructure and equipment (in working state) is main reason I guess.
I have been to Safdarjung Hospital almost on weekly basis when I was in Delhi, One of my classmate was working there in the Hospital. That Hospital is overrun with influx of Patients many times more than it is able to handle. I am pretty sure she was given best possible treatment and I dun know enough details why they made the decision to shift her to Singapore when they had AIIMS just across the street.

As she was an important case so she got the all the help possible but if you goto that Hospital`s any ward , like for Medicine ward , you will be astonished how many patient`s don`t even get a bed because they are just way too many patients . I have seen with my own eyes how sometimes space between two beds is also taken by patients.

So we as country needs a lot more Hospitals and equipment in working order. And we def need more Healthcare professionals. In Delhi not many Govt hospitals have a working CT and I remember sometimes we referred patient to one hospital for CT in middle of night and usually Ambulance would drive around the town trying to find a Govt Hospital with working CT scan.

Agree to you but lets hope her death shouldn't become another high end drama for India and our politician and public should learn something from it

Is that a good thing or a bad thing ?

If her death makes the issue bigger..and gets people off their damn backsides to do something about it..and brings a change in Indians perception towards women and creates changes to the law..Then her death would not have been in vain.

Politicians and public in India will not learn anything if it doesn't become a "high end drama".

If it dies down then it will be SSDD for the Indian public and politicians.

The 23-year-old victim "died peacefully," according to a statement by Singapore's Mount Elizabeth hospital where she was being treated.
